History of TVG-Zimsen
TVG-Zimsen was formed by the merger of The Bonded Warehouse plc (Tollvörugeymslan hf.) and Jes Zimsen Forwarding plc. Prior to this The Bonded Warehouse plc had taken over the operation of the General Bonded Warehouse plc in Akureyri. The company roots go all the way back to 1894 when merchant Jes Zimsen started an extensive commercial enterprise in Reykjavík.
The shipping office was a department within the original company, becoming a separate company in 1932 under the title Jes Zimsen Forwarding. The operation has changed considerably over the years, and a few changes of ownership have occurred. Originally Jes Zimsen’s shipping department was agent for the United Steamship Company (DFDS), a Danish company which sailed between Iceland and Denmark.
As transportation and business practices developed and imports increased Jes Zimsen Forwarding began offering other services. In time the company became a general forwarding service provider able to offer one-stop solutions in transportation.
The Bonded Warehouse plc was founded in 1962 by a group led by Helgi K. Hjálmsson. The company offered warehouse facilities for bonded goods and soon became a leading company in its field.
In 1996 the companies merged under the name of TVG-Zimsen, offering a comprehensive transportation service embracing air freight, courier service, sea freight, customs brokerage, price calculation, return of goods, transshipments, bonded warehousing, free zone services, and the like.
In February 2004 TVG-Zimsen moved all its warehousing from Héðinsgata to the Warehouse Hotel’s new facility in Sundabakki 2. The Warehouse Hotel Ltd. is TVG-Zimsen’s and Eimskip’s partnership company, and handles all TVG-Zimsen’s warehousing services. TVG-Zimsen’s office facilities are at Kornagarðar 2, and the company focuses on the operation of its freight forwarding service, comprising sea freight, air freight and documentation.
TVG-Zimsen Ltd. is a member of FIATA (International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations) and was in 1998 awarded recognition for 25 year membership of the association.
